February 2, 2016
(Tumon, Guam) The Guam Visitors Bureau (GVB) partnered with the Trench Fest organizers, Sidekicks Soccer Team, Islandwide Beautification Task Force, Matson, Tamuning Mayor’s Office and Televista Property owner David Su to clean up the beach access road behind Crowns Guam in Tumon. Various private citizens and volunteers from the University of Guam and USS Kitty Hawk also joined in the collaborative clean up effort.
“Illegal dumping and homelessness continue to be a problem, but we’re proud to see the community come together to help clean up this public safety hazard in Tumon,” said GVB General Manager Nathan Denight. “It’s this type of partnership that brings out the best in our island. A lot of our resources have been dedicated to protect our natural environment, but it’s important for all of us to work together so everyone can enjoy our island paradise. Un Dangkulo na Si Yu’os Ma’ase to everyone that took the time out to help us out this past weekend.”
The clean up took place on Saturday, January 30, 2016 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. While the public beach access point was the main focus, the team also cleaned up the surrounding area, including the roadside leading to the beach access in Tumon. The trash collected was enough to fill up a 20 foot container and also a 40 foot container.
Another clean up of this area is also being planned in the coming months. Additionally, GVB recently conducted a clean up of another illegal dump site in Tamuning near Mark’s Sporting Goods with the Guam Power Authority, Guam Waterworks Authority, Tamuning Mayor’s Office and Guam Environmental Protection Agency.
